The most important aspect of packing to move is organization. There is nothing more frustrating than needing a particular item and not knowing where it is packed. It can take hours and create a big mess if you can’t find something.
You should first make a list of all the packing materials needed:
• Sturdy boxes of varying sizes, depending on the number of items to be packed
• Strong packing tape
• A dark-colored marker
• Bubble wrap and Styrofoam peanuts
• Plenty of clean newspapers
• Disposable zip lock baggies of various sizes
• Strong twine or rope
Packing For Local & Long Distance Moves
Begin in the first room, and pack everything that is in the room. Prepare the boxes by reinforcing the bottoms with tape. Try not to over or under pack, or put so many things in a box that it weighs more than 40 to 50 pounds. Wrap all breakable items well with newspaper or bubble wrap, placing the heaviest items in the bottom of the box. Fill in any empty space with newspaper or other material. Pack clothing separate, since clothes can be destroyed if they are in a box of fragile things and something breaks or spills.
Pack all stereo equipment, computers, etc. in their original boxes if you have them. If you do not, then wrap each component carefully and put crumpled newspapers in the bottom of each box before adding these items.
Always use smaller boxes for books, since they will be heavy.
Liquids, medicines and lotions should be placed in zip lock baggies before packing. Cleaning supplies should be packed last, in case you will be cleaning the empty place before leaving.
Mark each box on one side and on the top with a number and the room it belongs in. Keep a list of the numbered boxes. You might be able to find free boxes from outside of stores, but the boxes that moving companies sell are much stronger and the extra cost for these boxes is worth considering.
Have any draperies or rugs cleaned before moving. Large rugs should be rolled and tied securely.
Keep all valuables, vital documents and similar items in a box or other container and take this with you.
